Rice is one of the most important staple foods consumed by over 85% of urban and rural households in Nigeria, irrespective of tribe, culture, religion, etc. The per capita consumption of rice is about 32 kg per annum, and given the country's population of over 180 million people, the total domestic demand for rice is about 5M metric tons per annum. In the last 10 years, the average domestic production capacity is about 2.7 million MT (about 55% of the total domestic consumption).
